The Wine Connection - Rare and premium wines
April 2017

The answer may not lie at the bottom of a bottle of wine,
but you should at least check.......

One of the joys of selling wine is meeting with the people who make them. A few days ago we had the pleasure of a visit with Donna Walker of Pulido-Walker, one of Napa Valley’s hottest super-premium wineries. She poured us a taste of their newest release, their 2014 Panek Vineyard Cabernet.  Taking full advantage of the ideal conditions of this dry year, winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown has perfectly captured the slow ripened fruit of the Paneck Vineyard. The resulting wine is remarkable, one of the best Cabernets we’ve tasted this year!
Only 225 cases were made.
Here’ what Robert Parker had to say in the most recent Wine Advocate:

2014 Pulido-Walker Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard

“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard (75% new French oak and 14.6% alcohol) has an inky purple color, loads of crème de cassis, blueberry and vanillin with graphite and licorice. It is full-bodied, exhibits terrific texture, low acidity and sweet, round tannin. This is a full-bodied classic that is delicious already, but promises to develop more nuances over the next decade and last for 20-25 years.” ~

2013 Pulido-Walker Cabernet Sauvignon Melanson Vineyard

“… reveals greater fruit intensity, more massive concentration, but still keeps its delineation and vibrancy on display. Loads of blueberries, blackberries and white flowers jump from the glass of this full-bodied wine, which shares a wonderful opulence and extravagant fruit nature with the (2013) Panek, but comes across slightly more floral. This is a beauty to drink over the next 20 years.” ~

Speaking of Thomas Rivers Brown, another one of his wines was brought to our attention, great example at an amazing price is:
        2012 Harris Estate
     Indulgence Napa Cab

Sourced from the Calistoga AVA, this beautiful fruit forward Cabernet has a brightness and full-bodied balance that we have come to expect from the hand of Thomas Brown. This wine is versatile for easy sipping and pairs well with a variety of foods. The acid and tannic structures reflect the style of our estate grown wines in an approachable manner and can be enjoyed for years to come.

2013 Jonata Todos - Red Blend

“Todos eclipses just about everyone else's Grand Vin… Full-bodied, supple, elegant and concentrated, with impeccable balance, it offers lots of purple fruit characteristics, spice, dried flowers and underbrush aromas and flavors. It’s one of the more approachable wines in the lineup, yet it will evolve for a decade or more on its purity and balance. Drink: 2016 - 2026.” ~Jeb Dunnuck for Robert Parker    Rated 94 Points

2013 Morlet Ma Douce – Ft. Ross

“…incredibly great Chardonnay.… Morlet, who hails from the Champagne region of France, is on a hot streak in terms of the quality of the exquisite wines he’s producing.... Ma Douce comes from the high-elevation ridge top vineyard, two ridges in from the Pacific Ocean, and is bottled without fining or filtration. It displays loads of tangerine oil, brioche, honeysuckle, and nectarine. It is full-bodied, beautifully pure, dense and capable of lasting at least 10-15 years. Drink: 2016 – 2031.”  ~ Robert Parker   Rated 96 Points

2013 K Vintners

Morrison Lane Walla Walla Syrah

“Easily the best vintage of this cuvee to date, it has a killer bouquet of olive tapenade, grounded, peppered meats and a core of darker fruits. Medium to full-bodied, seamless, elegant and with fine tannin, it’s terrific and will drink nicely for 10-15 years. Drink: 2016 – 2031.” ~ Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate  Rated 95 Points

2015 Paul Pernot Bourgogne Blanc

Ever wonder what wine merchants drink on a Wednesday night? Based in Puligny-Montrachet, the Paul Pernot winery is one of the great names in Burgundy, famed for their vibrant, mineral-nuanced whites. This Bourgogne Blanc is mostly sourced from their Puligny vineyards.  Deceptively tasty in youth, this wine famously develops significant concentration and complexity with bottle age. Buy some to drink and some to cellar for a few years, you’ll be very glad you did!

2015 Domaines Ott Chateau Clos Mireille Provence Rose

“A wonderful pastel colour with salmon notes and hints of copper and pink gold. The elegant and delicate bouquet develops aromas of candied melon and citrus zest, both fresh and heady. On the palate the immediate impression is energizing, like morning dew, with bursts of fruity redcurrant note. The seductive balance is a vibrant tribute to the Clos Mireille terroir, combining the generosity of precise ripeness with the crisp freshness of summer fruits such as apricot and peach.
