With their 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, the De Wet family’s Excelsior estate has delivered an example of this beloved grape of exceptional value. Ripe black currant and elderberry promised on the nose are juicy yet not at all superficially sweet in their palate presence. Blond tobacco, hemp, moss, and toasted nuts add complexity to this polished, mouth-filling Cabernet, and unlike last year’s rendition which evinced a hint of finishing heat, I could detect none (despite 14.5% alcohol) in the exuberantly, vividly fruity finish of this 2007. I would plan to enjoy it over the coming year. Robert Parker 86
