2014 Tikal - Malbec

2014 Tikal

Patriota Malbec / Bonarda

The 2014 Patriota is a blend of 60% Malbec and 40% Bonarda from Vista Flores and Ribadavia respectively, matured in new and used oak barrels--60% French and 40% American--for one year. The warm year suited the Bonarda nicely, which is grown in a different zone to start with. I feel a much better integration of the oak compared with previous vintages. It feels like the style is turning towards more freshness and less oak. This is ripe and juicy, full of character. I liked 2015 slightly better. 160,000 bottles produced. Wine Advocate 89

Bright medium ruby. High-pitched aromas of blackberry, cassis and violet, complemented by sexy oak tones of smoke and spices. Plush and velvety, conveying lovely sweetness and lift to its flavors of dark berries and spices; a bit more jammy and open-knit than the saltier Natural blend. This fine-grained, concentrated wine, reportedly Argentina's most successful $20 red blend in the U.S., finishes with suave, firm tannins and very good length. -- Stephen Tanzer 90
