1961, 1970, 2000 Ducru Beaucaillou

(1 bottles of each vintage 1961, 1970, 2000)

1961 Vintage:
The 1961 Ducru Beaucaillou has long been an impressive Saint Julien and here served blind from a bottle purchased directly from the château, I have no cause to change that view. This was broodier and more introspective on the nose compared to several others that I have tasted in recent years. Black fruit, black teak and black truffle. However, there is wonderful definition and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, good body and depth, a little sinew remaining after all these years and therefore, not the most finessed 1961 you can find. However, the substance and persistence in the mouth are very impressive, that long tail of tobacco-tinged black fruit suggesting that it will continue to give pleasure for 20 years easily. Tasted September 2016. Robert Parker 96

1970 vintage:
This wine has been fully mature and delicious for many years, so I was not surprised by how stunning this bottle was. It has always been an outstanding wine for the vintage - complex, rich, savory, and the quintessentially elegant Bordeaux. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and finesse that one expects from Lafite-Rothschild but so rarely finds. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, fruitcake, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, graciously-constructed wine with sweet layers of fruit. I am not sure how much longer the 1970 Ducru will keep, but from regular bottle, it is delicious and should be consumed. How nice it would be to have a stock of magnums of this wine in the cellar!

2000Vintage:A stunning wine from Ducru Beaucaillou which showcases its great terroir, this elegant but substantial 2000 has a dense purple color that has hardly budged since it was first bottled. Displaying a floral note, with hints of boysenberries, black raspberries, black currants and a touch of background oak, the wine has superb concentration and density, but still has some substantial tannins that are not yet fully resolved. I originally predicted that it should be drinkable from 2010-2030, but I would modify that now to 2015-2035.. Robert Parker 95
