The outstanding 1999 Col Solare is medium to dark ruby-colored and reveals spicy blackberry aromas. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the remaining 10% divided between Syrah and Malbec, it exhibits gorgeous breadth to its medium-bodied, concentrated personality. This well-extracted wine has outstanding depth of fruit. Intense, juicy, and powerful, it coats the taster's palate with blackberries, cassis, and spices. Robert Parker 91
(a blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 3% syrah and 2% malbec) Full medium ruby. Pungent, oaky aromas of black raspberry, roast coffee, mocha and root beer. Lush and smooth on entry, then rather tightly wound, dominated by its youthful acidity. A large-scaled, brooding wine that quite closed today. Finishes with firm, slightly drying tannins. Much less pliant at a similar stage of its evolution than the immediately seductive '98, but this may well merit a 90-point rating with three or four years of additional bottle aging. -- Stephen Tanzer 89+
