Winemaker Notes
The weather was highly variable all year long, marked by hot, dry months of August and September, ensuring very good ripening of the grapes and guaranteeing a perfect state of health right up to the harvests. In addition the skins were very thick, providing very high marc/juice ratios resulting in wines with lots of colour, rich and very mature tannins, with extraordinary fruit. Harvesting are on 3 and 5 October. The winemaker preferred to make the most of the last days of sun to perfect the ripeness of the grapes.
Until 2005 Péby Faugères was owned by the Guisez family, who also owned Château Faugères and Château Péby-Faugères, on a property 6 kilometres east of the village of Saint Emilion. On the death of Péby Guisez in 1997, his daughter Corinne selected the property's best plots to create Péby Faugères, which is matured in new oak barrels for 16 months. These three properties were acquired in 2005 by the business man Silvio Denz (owner of Lalique). Advised by Michel Rolland, the new owner upheld traditions and continued to produce a haute couture wine. From the 2009 vintage onwards, Château Péby Faugères' bottles have been engraved with a Lalique design
Press
The luxury cuvee from Faugeres (owned by Bernard Magrez), the Peby Faugeres is the real deal. Sadly, only 500+ cases were made of this compelling St.-Emilion. An inky/blue/purple hue is accompanied by aromas of espresso roast, blueberry liqueur, smoke, and graphite. Thick and unctuously-textured with impressive purity and depth as well as full-bodied power and richness, it needs another 2-3 years of cellaring, and should last for two decades.
Rated 90 Points Decanter
An extremely well made, well finessed wine from Silvio Denz. Powerful, a little heavier than some, it has the sexiness and the richness, with liquorice notes, and is one for the hedonists.
Rated 96 Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2016 Peby Faugeres (100% Merlot aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak barriques) has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. Wow--it slides sensuously out of the glass with scents of candied violets, Chinese five spice and chocolate box over a core of baked plums, black cherry compote and warm black raspberries plus wafts of new leather and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is decadently spicy, with bags of black fruit preserves framed by plush tannins, finishing with a refreshing lift.
