Tasting Notes from the Winemaker
The start of the 2019 growing season welcomed rainfall after a dry winter. These late rains brought in much needed moisture that gave the vines an excellent start to the season. An extended summer of moderately warm days and cool nights allowed for very slow ripening and optimal flavor development. The grapes for this wine are from three of California’s premiere growing regions: Santa Rita Hills, located in Santa Barbara County; Arroyo Seco in Monterey County; and the cool, fog-shrouded Napa and Sonoma Carneros.
The grapes for this wine were hand harvested at night and barrel fermented in our cellar at 48-50F. This long, cold barrel fermentation ensured bright tropical and citrus aromas were highlighted, preserving the natural acidity while inhibiting the secondary malolactic fermentation. ZD’s signature style embraces rich and balanced fruit driven Chardonnays. Aging for 10 months in American Oak barrels also contributed to these favorable characteristics.
Bright, forward aromas of ripe pineapple, guava, and hints of citrus fruits are complemented by subtle notes of orange blossom and sweet toasty vanilla. The palate is full bodied and rich with notes of pineapple, mandarin, and lemon rind that integrate wonderfully with the natural, vibrant acidity and subtle American Oak. This wine is drinking beautifully now, and like all ZD’s wines, it will age gracefully and develop complexity for years to come.
