Dave Umino always longed to return to his early days growing up on a truck farm in Orosi in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Now a third generation farmer, he wears a broad proud smile as he drives his tractor in between his beloved Pinot vines in the Sebastopol Hills area of the Sonoma Coast. I cherish his tales of hand wringing in the early frontier days of grape growing on the rugged Sonoma coast not knowing if there’d be enough warmth to ripen his Pinot noir clusters. Farming is always a gamble, a game taken on for the love of having your hands in the soil and the rewards of harvest. I relish in my relationship with the farmers I work with, Dave Umino being the latest.

Hand harvested at night under head lamps, the work is slow and painstaking. Our care and fermentation is by hand keeping whole clusters in the vat. The results are charming. Floral, spicy aromas along with freshly crushed wild berry flavors are soft, yet have a delicate intensity through the palate and its long juicy and fine finish. Bottled unfiltered after 10 months in French oak barrels.

Robert Park, The Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pinot Noir Umino Vineyard is medium ruby-purple in color and reveals an intense nose of crushed black cherries, black raspberries and redcurrants with touches of rose hips, cinnamon stick, chocolate box and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied with a firm backbone of chewy tannins and background freshness, it finishes long with some lovely baking spice notions coming through." 92 points
