Winemaker Notes
Puligny-Montrachet Les Charmes
This special lieu-dit sits on the border of Puligny-Montrachet and
Meursault. In fact, it is the continuation of Meursault 1er Cru Les
Charmes, but on the Puligny side. The soils are deeper on this side
of Puligny than throughout the rest of the commune and features
alternating layers of clay and limestone covered with a considerable
amount of calcareous gravel. This lends a great deal of fruit and
richness to the wine.

Winemaking for Sylvie is fairly straightforward and gloriously light
handed. Whole cluster pressed and sent to barrel to ferment. Albert
Joly enjoys a very rare, very small, underground cellar. Here the
wines ferment in the painfully cold environment. This, combined with
the warmth of barrel fermentation, allows the yeast to develop an
almost Meursault-like reduction—matchstick and savory.
Here is a little spice, ripe essence of pear and acacia blossom and a
little more width of aroma than a typical Puligny, more depth and
layers of flavor too. The fresh, intense, and well-delineated medium
bodied flavors are fine-grained with good mid-palate density before
concluding with touches of warmth and lemon zest.
